Hands On Open Source Technology Workshops

The hands-on workshops will focus on installation and configuration of some very interesting open source projects. The aim is to demonstrate the practicality and business sense of open source projects.

The aim of this open source workshop is to provide engineers, IT professionals, IT enthusiasts and personnel from established organisations with a hands‐on experience that will demonstrate the practical application and usefulness of open source projects. The workshop is designed to cover key aspects of the selected platforms so that participants can deploy these projects on their own. Many people will immediately see the benefits
such as cost reduction, efficiency improvement and income generation from this workshop.

What you will be provided with:

The facilitator will provide:

  1. All the software that will be used during the workshop on a CD/DVD
  2. Workshop Course material
  3. Writing Pad and pen/pencils

What you are expected to come with:

Please bring your own laptop that has the following hardware and software installed:

  1. WiFi – a/b or g
  2. CD/DVD Rom Drive
  3. Microphone and Headphone sockets
  4. A Web Browser (Microsoft internet explorer, Firefox, Safari etc)
  5. An ssh client (putty if you have windows). We will provide this on disk if you do not have the client.

** Please also bring:

  1. A headset that has a microphone!!
  2. Your cell phone (for our SMS alerts exercise)

Pre-­requisites:

Everyone  attending the course will be  expected to have theoretical back on the following topics:

  1. TCP/IP  addresses
  2. UDP and TCP Ports
  3. IP protocols – general overview
  4. Firewalls
  5. DNS

An email  will be sent  out a few days before the course to all confirmed participants with an attachment that provides the overview tutorials on the pre-­‐requisite subjects. This is so that our discussions during the    workshop are concentrated on the practical side of the implementations.
